MapAI vs ChatGPT, Copilot and other AI assistants
A general assistant can talk about a place. MapAI assembles the evidence about it, runs the spatial analysis, and shows its working.
The short answer
Use a general AI assistant to draft, summarise and think out loud. Use MapAI when the answer depends on spatial data and someone will ask how you got it. General assistants do not come with a spatial engine, curated Australian datasets or a method library, and they can answer the same question differently each time. MapAI finds and combines the relevant data, runs the analysis on a spatial engine, shows every source, assumption and step, and routes common questions to methods validated by GIS experts. Many professionals use both: the assistant for the words, MapAI for the evidence.

- planners, transport and infrastructure teams, property and development, environment and policy professionals, and the GIS experts who validate for them.
- The job
- assemble a trusted evidence base for a place, project or decision.
- The moment you reach for it
- “I need to understand what is true about this place before I recommend anything.”
General AI assistants
- Built for
- everyone, for almost any task involving language.
- The job
- draft, summarise, explain, brainstorm, write code.
- The moment you reach for it
- “Help me think this through and write it up.”

General AI assistants (drafting, briefing)
General assistants live in the decision and workflow layer: they help you write the brief, not build the evidence underneath it. When they reach into spatial data, they do it by improvising code or calling someone else's GIS. MapAI is built as the evidence layer itself, with the data connections, spatial engine and provenance trail that job needs.

Core strengthWhere General AI assistants is the better choice
- Writing the brief, the business case or the summary once the evidence is in hand.
- Explaining a concept, a regulation or a method in plain language.
- Quick desk research that does not depend on spatial data or a defensible method.
- Tasks your organisation has already approved it for, where no new procurement is needed.
- Working across many domains at once, where spatial is only a small part of the question.
Where MapAI is the better choice
- The answer depends on combining spatial datasets: zoning, hazards, catchments, services, demographics, your own layers.
- Someone will ask “which data did you use, how current is it, and what did you assume?” MapAI shows all three for every answer.
- The same question will be asked again, by you or by a colleague, and must return the same answer for the same scope.
- You need a map and data you can hand back to a GIS team, not a screenshot.
- Your data is sensitive and must stay in Australian infrastructure with enterprise controls.
Use both, in the right order
You can keep using your general assistant alongside MapAI. The pattern that works is simple: assemble the evidence in MapAI, then take the summary, the map and the evidence trail into your assistant to draft the document.
- Ask the place-based question in MapAI and open the evidence trail.
- Export the result as CSV or GeoJSON for your GIS, and the map as PNG for the document.
- Paste the summary and the list of datasets and assumptions into your assistant to draft the brief.
- Keep MapAI's answer, with its sources, as the record behind the document.

Common questions
Can't I just upload a shapefile to ChatGPT or Copilot?
Sometimes, for small files. The common failures are projection and unit errors (such as a buffer calculated in degrees), size limits, and a different answer when you ask again. MapAI runs the analysis on a spatial engine built for the job and shows the method so you can check it.
Is MapAI just ChatGPT with a map?
No. The natural-language interface is the easy part. MapAI's value is in the data it has already connected, the spatial engine it runs, the evidence trail it keeps for every answer and the library of validated methods it routes common questions to. We don't publish which models MapAI uses; enterprise customers can bring their own model account.
Does MapAI replace my GIS team?
No. MapAI sits alongside your GIS and your GIS experts. It takes the repeatable find-check-combine work off their queue, and they validate the methods everyone else reuses.
Which AI assistant does MapAI work with?
MapAI is a standalone platform; you don't need an assistant to use it. Exports (CSV, GeoJSON, PNG) and the written summary can be used in any assistant your organisation has approved.
