MapAI vs CARTO

CARTO brings spatial analysis to your data warehouse. MapAI brings validated spatial evidence to the people making the decision.

The short answer

CARTO is cloud-native location intelligence for enterprises whose data lives in BigQuery, Snowflake, Databricks, Redshift or PostgreSQL. Its AI Agents answer questions on that data, and its MCP server exposes CARTO Workflows as governed tools to other agents. If you have a data warehouse, a data team and a geospatial programme to run on it, CARTO is a strong platform. MapAI needs none of that to start: Australian government, partner and organisational data are connected, the spatial engine is built in, every answer carries its evidence trail, and the methods domain professionals reuse are validated by GIS experts. CARTO is priced on platform usage with annual commitments; MapAI on capacity, with unlimited users.

Who each is built for

MapAI Explore

Built for
domain professionals making place-based decisions, and the GIS experts who validate for them.
The job
assemble a trusted evidence base for a place, project or decision.
The moment you reach for it
“I need a defensible answer about this place, and I don't have a data team.”

CARTO

Built for
data scientists, GIS and analytics teams, and developers in data-warehouse-centred enterprises.
The job
build spatial analysis pipelines, maps, apps and agents on warehouse data.
The moment you reach for it
“Our data is in the warehouse; run the spatial analysis there.”

Where each sits in the stack

  2. 2 Data and infrastructure

  3. 3 GIS systems of record

    CARTO (Builder, Workflows)
  4. 4 Spatial Evidence Layer

  5. 5 Decisions and workflows

CARTO is built down into the warehouse: analysis runs where the data lives and the platform is governed by the enterprise's data team. MapAI is built up towards the decision: it assembles evidence from many sources for people who will never see a warehouse, and keeps the method visible so they can stand behind the result.

Where CARTO is the better choice

  • Your spatial data already lives in a cloud data warehouse and must be analysed there without moving it.
  • You have a data or GIS team that will build and govern analysis pipelines, apps and agents.
  • Very large-scale analysis, machine learning and geospatial data science on warehouse compute.
  • Exposing your own governed spatial workflows to the AI agents your enterprise already runs.
  • Developer platforms and custom spatial applications.

Where MapAI is the better choice

  • No data warehouse, no data engineering team, and a decision to make this month.
  • Australian government and open data already connected and discoverable, rather than loaded by your team first.
  • Methods validated by GIS experts and curated for your organisation, rather than built by you.
  • An evidence trail written for the reader of the answer, so a planner or executive can inspect it.
  • Pricing a planning team can start on today: free to start, additional capacity in batches, unlimited users.

If you already use CARTO

CARTO and MapAI serve different people in the same organisation. The data team works in CARTO; domain professionals ask MapAI. The hand-offs are standard files and connections.

  • Export analysis-ready tables from CARTO as GeoJSON or CSV and upload them to MapAI alongside open and partner data.
  • Bring MapAI results back into your warehouse or Builder maps as GeoJSON or CSV.
  • Use MapAI's evidence trail as the readable record behind a CARTO-driven analysis.
  • Private connectors to organisational data sources are planned for Enterprise committed capacity.

Pricing model

MapAI

  • Additional capacity in batches when you need more
  • Enterprise committed capacity on request

CARTO

  • Pay As You Go: billed monthly on a 12-month contract, usage units per workflow run, map load and API call
  • Enterprise, Strategic and Custom committed tiers paid annually with fixed quotas
  • Agentic GIS listed on all plans
  • No prices published; quoted by CARTO

Data residency, security and trust

MapAI

Australian-hosted infrastructure, with data residency options for government work. Your organisation's data is not used to train public models. Single sign-on and advanced security controls on Enterprise. SOC 2 and ISO 27001 programmes underway. Bring-your-own model account supported for Enterprise.

CARTO

CARTO runs analysis in your connected cloud data warehouse, so data residency largely follows your warehouse region. CARTO publishes its security and compliance details on its own site; check AI Agent and MCP data handling against your requirements.

Common questions

CARTO exposes governed workflows to AI agents. Isn't that the same as MapAI's validated methods?

They rhyme, but the work sits in different places. In CARTO, your data team builds and governs the workflows. In MapAI, common questions are routed to methods validated by GIS specialists and curated for your organisation and industry, and new methods are flagged until reviewed. MapAI is for organisations that don't have, or don't want to spend, a data team on it.

Do we need a data warehouse to use MapAI?

No. MapAI connects to open and partner data and accepts your files and public ArcGIS REST services. Private connectors are planned for Enterprise committed capacity.

Can MapAI handle large-scale analysis?

MapAI runs on a PostGIS engine and is built for the place-based questions planning, infrastructure, property, environment and policy teams ask. For planetary-scale data science on warehouse compute, CARTO is the better fit.

Does MapAI have AI agents or an MCP server?

MapAI is itself the assistant for spatial evidence; you ask it directly. An MCP server is not currently available.

Is MapAI available now?

MapAI Explore is available in Australia and free to start. Sign up to get started, or request a structured trial built around a real workflow for your team.
